Scytale

An ebook reader for the books you own, with two-way Calibre sync. No account and no store.

Your books, your files

Scytale reads the DRM-free books you already own: EPUB, PDF, CBZ comics, FB2, TXT and RTF. Import them from Files, open them from another app, or download them from your own server.

There is no store and no account. Books bought with copy protection from Kindle, Apple Books or Kobo can't be opened.

Two-way sync with Calibre

Connect Scytale to your Calibre content server to browse your libraries and download books. Reading progress, status, rating and notes are written back to Calibre columns you choose, and changes made in Calibre come back to the app.

When the same book has moved forward in two places, Scytale asks which position to keep instead of overwriting one.

Any OPDS catalog works too, including Standard Ebooks and Project Gutenberg, which are built in.

Made for reading

Paged or continuous scrolling, two-page spreads on iPad, four themes, eight fonts including OpenDyslexic and Atkinson Hyperlegible, and tap zones you can rearrange. Highlight in five colours, add notes and bookmarks, and export them as Markdown or CSV, or send them to Readwise.

Reading time, streaks and goals are tracked on the device, with Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets.

Read Aloud

Have any EPUB read to you with the voices on your device, with a sleep timer and Lock Screen controls.

Natural-sounding voices are available for English books. The speech is generated on your iPhone or iPad, so the text of your books never leaves it. Natural voices need a device with 6 GB of memory and a one-time download of about 130 MB.

Private by design

Scytale has no ads, no analytics and no tracking. S4 Solutions cannot see your library.

Help and policies

Scytale needs iOS 26 or later. It also runs on Macs with Apple silicon.
