Help setting up and using safeT1D School Mode.
Before you start
safeT1D needs Apple Family Sharing.
- Your child's iPhone must be signed in to their own child Apple Account (not yours).
- That account must be in your Family Sharing group.
- You approve on your child's iPhone with your own Apple Account.
safeT1D can't be set up without this. It's what stops your child turning School Mode off. Apple's guides: set up Family Sharing, create your child's Apple Account.
Getting started
- Install safeT1D on your child's iPhone and choose My child's. Tap Approve as parent and approve with your own Apple Account.
- Tap the lock to open Grown-up settings. Choose the medical apps (pick individual apps, not categories), set school hours, and finish the safety check.
- Run the alarm test below and confirm your CGM alerts still come through before relying on School Mode.
- On your own iPhone, install safeT1D and choose Mine (parent). Then, on your child's phone, tap the lock → Invite a parent and send the invite to your Apple Account.
Alarm test
Apps that School Mode blocks can't alert. This test proves your child's diabetes apps still can. It uses only what is already on the iPhone. Do it with your child's iPhone in your hand, before turning on the school schedule and again after each iOS update.
Get the phone ready: volume up, silent mode off, no Focus (Do Not Disturb, Sleep) turned on, and any Apple Watch off the wrist. A worn Watch takes the alerts and the phone stays quiet.
- Step 1. Practice with Reminders. In Grown-up settings, edit the medical apps and add Apple's Reminders, just for this test. In Reminders, make a reminder due 3 minutes from now. Back in safeT1D, tap Start 16-minute test and lock the phone. The reminder should sound and show on the lock screen.
- Step 2. Check a real CGM alarm. While the test is still on, open the CGM app's alert settings. Move the High alert just below the current reading, or the Low alert just above it. Lock the phone and wait for the next reading, which can take 5 to 10 minutes. The alarm should sound and show on the lock screen. Then put the alert level back.
- Step 3. Finish. If both alerts arrived, tick Alarm test passed in the safety check. Take Reminders off the medical apps again, unless your child needs it at school.
Never turn off or change the Urgent Low alarm for this test.
If either alert didn't arrive, don't turn on the school schedule. Check the app is ticked in the medical apps and in Settings → Screen Time → Always Allowed, then try again. Still nothing? Email info@s4solutions.ai.
Common questions
- Will School Mode block my child's CGM app? Only if it isn't on the allowed list. School Mode won't start with an empty list, and the safety check asks you to confirm the CGM and pump apps. Also add them to iOS Screen Time "Always Allowed".
- The safety check mentions an "Alert Probe" test or a safety test document. What is that? Version 1.0 refers to a test tool that was only used during development and isn't available to download. Use the alarm test above instead; it checks the same thing. An update will put these steps in the app.
- Can my child turn School Mode off? Not alone. Once a parent is linked, ending School Mode or changing settings needs a parent's approval; your child can tap Ask a grown-up to send you a request. Family Sharing also stops your child removing safeT1D's Screen Time access without a parent's approval.
- I tapped "Approve as parent" and it says "This iPhone isn't set up as a child's". The iPhone isn't signed in to a child Apple Account in your Family Sharing group. Check Settings → [name] on the child's iPhone: it should show your child's own account, and Settings → Family on your iPhone should list your child. Then tap Approve as parent again. Older versions of the app showed "Authorization failed: Family Controls is restricted" for the same reason.
- Can I use safeT1D without Family Sharing, or on my child's phone with my own Apple Account? No. Without a child account in Family Sharing, iOS lets whoever holds the phone switch off an app's Screen Time access, so School Mode couldn't be relied on.
- My child is 13 or older. Do they still need a child account? They need their own Apple Account in your Family Sharing group, with you as the parent or guardian. Family Sharing treats under-18s as children for Screen Time.
- I'm not getting requests or alerts on my phone. Check that notifications are on for safeT1D in iOS Settings, and open safeT1D on both phones once so they reconnect. iOS may delay updates when an app has been swiped away.
- The parent app says it hasn't heard from my child's phone. The phone may be off, offline, or safeT1D may have been swiped away. School Mode keeps blocking either way; opening safeT1D on the child's phone sends a fresh report.
- Does safeT1D see my child's glucose data? No. It never reads health data. See the privacy policy.
